Treatments offered

Treatments are planned after a consultation and a review of reports. HIPEC and major surgery are offered only when they are the right option for that patient.

Surgical Oncology Consultation

A first visit or second opinion to decide whether surgery is the right next step.

The consultation is the starting point for cancer surgery. Dr. Gandhi looks at the reports you already have, examines what the scans show, and says clearly whether an operation is needed, can wait, or is not the right treatment. Bring every report you have, including older scans.

  • Review of biopsy, imaging and previous treatment
  • Explanation of surgical options in plain language
  • A written plan for tests, surgery or further opinion

HIPEC

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, considered only for selected peritoneal cancers.

HIPEC is a procedure in which heated chemotherapy solution is circulated inside the abdomen after visible tumour has been removed. It is used for selected cancers that have spread along the peritoneal lining, such as certain appendix, colorectal, ovarian and peritoneal tumours. It is not suitable for every abdominal cancer. Suitability is decided only after staging and a surgical assessment.

  • Heated chemotherapy circulated in the abdomen
  • Usually paired with cytoreductive surgery
  • Offered after staging shows it is suitable

Cytoreductive Surgery

Surgery to remove visible tumour from the abdominal cavity before HIPEC, when both are planned.

Cytoreductive surgery aims to remove tumour that can be seen in the peritoneal cavity. For selected patients it is performed in the same operation as HIPEC. The extent of surgery depends on where the disease sits and on the patient’s fitness. That decision is made after consultation, not from a website form.

  • Removal of visible peritoneal disease
  • Often combined with HIPEC in one operation
  • Extent decided from scans and findings in theatre

Gastrointestinal cancer surgery — Dr. Amit R. Gandhi, surgical oncologist Mumbai
04

Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery

Surgery for cancers of the stomach, colon, rectum, appendix and related abdominal organs.

Gastrointestinal cancer surgery covers operations for tumours of the digestive tract and related organs. The type and extent of the operation depend on the tumour, prior treatment and what the scans show. Perioperative chemotherapy, when needed, is planned with the treating team.

  • Stomach, colorectal and appendix cancers
  • Surgical plan based on staging, scans and prior treatment
  • Coordination with chemotherapy plans already in progress

Gynaecological cancer surgery — Dr. Amit R. Gandhi, Mumbai

Gynaecological Cancer Surgery

Surgical care for ovarian, uterine and related gynaecological cancers, including cytoreduction.

Some gynaecological cancers, especially selected ovarian cancers, are treated with surgery to remove as much visible disease as possible. HIPEC may be discussed when the diagnosis and staging support it. Fertility, staging and prior chemotherapy all change the plan, so they are reviewed at the consultation.

  • Ovarian, uterine and related cancers
  • Cytoreductive surgery where indicated
  • HIPEC considered only for suitable cases

Breast cancer surgery consultation — Dr. Amit R. Gandhi, Mumbai
06

Breast Cancer Surgery

Surgical planning for breast cancer, including breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy when indicated.

Breast cancer surgery is planned from the biopsy, mammogram or MRI, and any treatment already started. The visit covers whether breast conservation or mastectomy is appropriate, and how surgery fits with chemotherapy or other care already advised.

  • Assessment of biopsy and imaging
  • Breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy when advised
  • Discussion of the place of surgery alongside other treatment

Soft tissue tumour and sarcoma surgery — Dr. Amit R. Gandhi, Mumbai
07

Soft Tissue Tumour Surgery

Evaluation and surgery for soft-tissue lumps and sarcomas that need a surgical opinion.

A new or growing soft-tissue lump should be assessed before it is removed. For suspected sarcoma, the biopsy route and the margins of surgery matter. The consultation decides whether imaging, a planned biopsy, or excision is the safer next step.

  • Assessment of soft-tissue lumps
  • Surgical planning for sarcomas
  • Advice on biopsy before a major excision

Cancer surgery

Types of cancer surgery

Surgery is the oldest form of cancer treatment. About 60% of cancer patients will undergo surgery, either by itself or in combination with other therapies. There are several types of cancer surgery.

Curative surgery — a cancerous tumour removed with a margin of healthy tissue, at Cansure Centre, Mumbai
Curative surgery

Curative surgery

Removal of a cancerous tumour. It works best on localised cancers that have not yet spread to other parts of the body, and is often followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to make sure all cancerous cells have been removed.

Preventive surgery — a precancerous polyp removed from inside the bowel before it can become cancer
Preventive surgery

Preventive surgery

Used to keep cancer from occurring. Many colon cancers can be prevented by removing precancerous polyps before they become malignant.

Reconstructive surgery — tissue rebuilt after cancer treatment to restore shape and function
Reconstructive surgery

Reconstructive surgery

Returns the body to normal or near-normal appearance or function following cancer treatment. The most common restorative surgery is breast reconstruction after mastectomy; facial reconstruction and bladder reconstruction are other examples.

Oral cancer — a growth inside the mouth (oral cavity); a biopsy confirms the diagnosis before treatment at Cansure Centre, Mumbai
Oral cancer

Diagnostic surgery (biopsy)

The surgeon removes some or all of a tumour for examination to determine if the growth is cancerous. A biopsy can be an FNAC, an incisional biopsy or an excisional biopsy.

Exploratory laparotomy — open abdominal surgery to see how far a cancer has spread, performed by Dr. Amit R. Gandhi

Staging surgery

Used to determine the extent of a cancer, so that the right treatment can be planned.

Supportive surgery — a chemotherapy port placed under the skin, with a catheter into a large vein
Chemotherapy port

Supportive surgery

Used to help with other cancer treatments. For example, some chemotherapy requires a port (connecting port) to be inserted under the skin.

Palliative surgery — a blocked passage opened or bypassed to ease symptoms; not a cure
Palliative surgery

Palliative surgery

Used to ease pain, disability or other complications that come with advanced cancer. Palliative surgery may improve quality of life, but it is not a cure or an anti-cancer treatment.

At Cansure Centre, we offer all types of surgery depending on the individual case requirement. Our Founder and Chief Onco Surgeon, Dr. Amit R. Gandhi, has more than 10,000 surgeries to his credit — our USP at Cansure is his experience, expertise and quality post-operative care.

This page describes the kinds of care offered. It is not a diagnosis and it does not mean every treatment is right for every patient.
